Nebraska Should Rethink Its Reliance on Microsoft

Nebraska leaders need to take a hard look at which technology companies we trust with public data and critical systems. Microsoft’s security record and deep ties to China raise real concerns that should not be brushed aside.

In the past, Microsoft has been known to rely on low-cost workers in China to help manage cloud infrastructure connected to U.S. defense operations. With that kind of outsourcing, Microsoft turned a clear security risk into a business decision, putting sensitive information within reach of a foreign adversary. No American should accept that.

We have already seen what these vulnerabilities look like in practice. In 2023, Chinese government hackers broke into email accounts of Members of Congress and other federal government workers, including Rep. Don Bacon’s email, through a Microsoft product flaw. Rep. Bacon has been a consistent voice for American interests abroad, including support for free speech and for Taiwan. Thus, the fact that he was targeted was likely no accident, and that it was made possible through a preventable weakness in Microsoft’s systems is a warning sign for every Nebraskan.

Our state should demand better. When we award contracts or standardize on software, we should favor vendors that keep sensitive work in America and demonstrate a robust commitment to cybersecurity. Nebraska families, businesses and public institutions deserve technology partners that protect them, not companies that treat security as an afterthought.
